Dog Training Is For Everyone And Every Dog

Everyone knows that dogs can be man's best friend. But we don't let our friends jump on us or chew on our shoes and we shouldn't let our dogs either. This article can help you understand the importance of dog training and why it is good for your dog and helps him be a better member of your family

An important key to effective dog training is to always enforce the first command you give to your dog. It is a mistake to keep repeating the command over and over again. The dog needs to learn that a command requires instant obedience. Do not give the dog the opportunity to disobey. Enforce the first command, and then promptly give a reward and praise.

To prevent your dog from digging in the trash, be sure he is well-fed and has plenty of toys of his own to play with. Empty your trash regularly, and don't put irresistible things like bones in it. Be sure to crate your dog when you go out and/or leave your trash can empty when you are gone.

When you are working at training your dog, positive reinforcement is everything. You need to give your dog lots of chances to get things right, and then immediately reinforce that desirable behavior. You can use treats or praise or a combination of both to let the dog know how happy you are with what they just did.

If you are going to dress your dog up for Halloween, don't be too elaborate. After all, your dog won't have any idea why you are doing such a silly thing, and he may be quite distressed or embarrassed by it. Just do something simple like a bandanna or something that will fit easily on his collar. In this way you will not run the risk of having your dog bolt or hide or engage in some other unexpected, potentially dangerous behavior.

Dogs who are afraid of thunderstorms or have some other specific phobia can be calmed with kava-kava. This is a natural, herbal supplement that has a calming effect and acts as a muscle relaxer. Consult your vet about the amount of kava-kava that is safe for your dog. Generally speaking, a large dog can take a single 325 mg capsule.

Be sure to have your dog spayed or neutered at 6 months. This should coincide with the beginning of obedience classes. A spayed or neutered dog is a better pet and a better obedience student. You will have a lot more happy years with your dog, and your dog will have a happier, healthier life.

Little dogs like Dachshunds that like to hide and burrow may enjoy beds or hideaways intended for cats. A tube type play structure or a cat bed that is covered and made of soft, flexible foam and faux fur may be exactly what your Doxy wants to curl up in secret!

To teach your dog not to chew inappropriately, be sure to provide him with plenty of appropriate things to chew. Make sure they are dog toys, not cast off human belongings. Whenever your dog begins to chew inappropriately, redirect him by giving him one of his own toys and taking away the inappropriate item.

If your dog gets anxious every time he sees you getting ready to leave the house, break up your routine a little bit. By changing your leaving routine a bit each day, you will be breaking the anxiety cycle that can trigger your dog to engage in destructive behaviors while you are gone. Leaving for varying amounts of time will also help break up the cycle. Leave for a few minutes one time and a little longer at other times. Eventually, your dog will get used to the idea that you may leave occasionally, and nothing bad will happen to him!

If you want to have a responsive dog that is easy to train, be sure to talk to your dog. Always use the same words to mean the same things and speak in the same tone of voice when you want certain results. Your dog will not be able to understand every word you say, but he will develop a reliable vocabulary if you take the time to teach him. This will make obedience training much easier.

If you have an older dog, get a nice bed made of memory foam to ease the stress on old bones. It's also good to get a bed with a Mylar backing to help older dogs stay nice and warm. A removable synthetic fleece cover will also add extra padding and warmth for older dogs.

Dogs are indeed man's best friend. As this article has stated, dog training is an important part of taking care of your dog. Training your dog helps him to understand what you want from him. Your dog wants to please you and dog training can help you to show your dog what you expect from him. That will make both of you happy.
