know how to train your dog

The question, can all dogs be trained', is much too imprecise to result in a meaningful discussion. It does not lead us to a focused and thoughtful debate on the role of training in the lives of dogs and people.

I believe there are no bad dogs, only bad dog owners. To begin with, I don't think the average person needs to purchase a dog, when there are so many looking for homes at the pound.

Most dog training is common sense but there are a few points to remember before you start.

1. Decide exactly what you want to teach your dog.

The basic commands are; Sit, Down, Stay, Heel, Come, leave. You can add extra ones once your dog has mastered the basics, but all dogs should be taught these first.
I have added, "Bed" to my list, enabling me to send them to bed if visitors arrive.

2. Only use one command for each action required. i.e., do not say, "sit down" for sit. This will confuse your dog.
Also, make sure everyone in your family uses the same words.

3. Be patient but persistent. Never shout at your dog and always reward good behavior instantly.

4. Keep your training sessions short. Ten minutes twice a day is enough for most dogs.

5. Teach each new command separately, making sure your dog fully understands one before moving on to the next.

6. Keep your facial expression happy. Dogs read or faces and can tell our emotions very easily. If you are asking your dog to come to you with a big frown on your face the dog will be confused.
