Can all dogs be train?

Contrary to the popular saying, the truth of the matter is you can teach old dog new tricks. It may be an uphill battle, but you can do it! Many animals are dropped off at shelters every year and most of them will be put to sleep and never experience the joy of being a part of a happy, healthy household. Being the animal lover I am, having to hear about pets being put to sleep is tough. It some cases, it means people are being irresponsible, and countless perfectly healthy, sweet, and loving animals are being destroyed for no good reason.

Most dogs dropped off at humane societies and shelters are considered "problem breeds", such as Dobermanns, German Shepherds, Pit Bulls, and Rottweilers. The fact is that these dogs can be changed (not just anyone can do this, if you are thinking of adopting an aggressive dog, please consult with a professional dog trainer before your purchase)! It takes persistent training from an owner, lots of time, as well as a strong will and firmness.

What is the first thing that comes to your mind when someone says the words "Pit Bull"? I bet you associate them with dog attacks, fatal dog attacks, dog fighting, and you probably think they are just downright mean dogs.

Although certain breeds of dogs are bred to be stronger than others, there is no such thing as a dog that is bred to be mean and attack humans. Improper training and handling pushes these dogs to attack. I know some people will read this and think, "No way, Pit Bulls are mean dogs, every single one of them. I just don't believe how a dog is handled has that much impact on its behavior." I do not think these people have ever had a dog of their own. They must not understand that dogs have their own unique personality, but that humans have a huge impact on how their animals (pets) behave.

The bottom line is people train dogs to act a certain way. The exact opposite of a dog that has been trained to be aggressive is a champion show dog. These are two extreme opposites, but both share a common behavior: they act the way their owners have trained them. Here is my advice to you: if you do not want your dog to be aggressive, do not train them to be that way. Do not make them afraid of people and do not make them think they are in control of everything. Owners are in complete control and should always reinforce their leadership role so the dog never forgets.
