Easy Steps To A Well Behaved Dog

Training your dog can have many benefits. It can help your dog become a better behaved dog and can help you become a better owner. This article can help you understand the benefits of dog training and what you can do to have positive dog training sessions. This will be time well spent that you will both enjoy.

Big dogs that like to stretch out or lie on their backs need a big bed. There are large, rectangular beds available for big dogs or you could just get your dog a crib mattress! This has a lot of advantages since you can change the cover on it easily and often by simply using fitted crib sheets. Additionally, crib mattresses are waterproof!

When you train your dog, you don"™t have to train him to do exactly what your training book or video says he should do; however, you must train him to behave in a way that will fit in well with your family. You must train him in such a way that you can take him for a walk or to the vet without a lot of drama. By determining exactly what sort of behavior you need from your dog and then working consistently to attain that behavior, you will support your dog in having a happier and more successful life.

When training your dog, never resort to violence. This will just scare your dog and teach him that you are not to be trusted. Instead, remain calm and redirect your dog to the behavior you want. Remember that your dog wants to please you, but he is not a human being. He may not understand what is expected of him.

To stop your dog from jumping up on you, push him back firmly with your knee and tell him NO in a firm and commanding voice. As soon as his feet are on the floor, pet him with your hands and praise him for being a good dog with his feet on the floor.

If you want to be successful at dog obedience training, you must be willing to commit to a specific amount of time on a consistent basis. Dogs learn from repetition and consistency. Additionally, the very act of spending a certain amount of time with your dog every day will convince him that you are a consistent and reliable person. These are two qualities that will work to make you the leader of the pack!

To prevent your dog from digging in your flower beds, set up an area where he can dig. Be sure to have all of his favorite things there - toys, food and water dishes and dog house. Provide soft, tempting soil. When your dog heads for your garden, just redirect him to his. Praise him for being in his area, and tell him NO, when he ventures into yours.

Be sure your dog knows how to behave in public and how to behave around other dogs by taking him or her to obedience classes at six months and to your local dog park on a regular basis. Another very good way to socialize your dog and build a strong bond with him or her is to get involved in agility classes or other advanced forms of dog training.

An important dog training tip is to use the pet's name whenever you are trying to get its attention. You need to get your pet used to responding to you when you call it by name. Use the pet's name when you feed it, take it for walks and play with it. Randomly call your pet to you by name several times throughout the day, and then reward it for coming when called. Never call your pet by its name to come to you only to be punished.

If your dogs are big and tough and young and go through beds as if they grow on trees, look for low cost alternatives. Use your imagination to come up with sofa cushions, comforters from the thrift store or garage sales, cast off pillows and other things that you don't mind having destroyed. Your dog will probably outgrow his bed destroying phase, and it's not worth it to get upset about it and spend a fortune on dog beds!

If you have an old dog, he may become grouchy and nervous. This is because older dogs often lose their vision, hearing, and/or sense of smell. This can cause them to feel uncertain and vulnerable. Be sure to keep things consistent for your old dog. Set up a comfortable area where he can always count on finding his comfy bed, favorite toy and a dish of food and water.

As already stated, dog training has many benefits. If you take the advice of the article and apply what you have learned, you will find that dog training can be fun. You will both enjoy the time spent together learning as well as the many benefits of working together as a team.
